Osteopathy is a system of complementary medicine, involving the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of medical disorders, through the manipulation and massage, of the musculoskeletal system. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual, depends on the systems of the body functioning synergistically.
Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, cranial techniques, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help the body’s own healing mechanisms.
As part of the treatment plan advice may be given on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.
Those who present may be any age, from newborn babies through the range to the elderly.
People present with work related issue, whether their job involves more manual labour or is more sedentary, as in driving or office based work, each can give rise to a variety of problems. Pregnant women also benefit from osteopathic treatment, as well as people with sport and exercise related injuries.
Osteopathy can be used to treat a vast spectrum of complaints all over the body i.e. general aches and pains in the head, back, neck, upper and lower limbs, all of which may have been caused for a variety of reasons. Patients may present with both acute and chronic issues.
A few examples of common presentations include headaches, migraines, back and neck pain, whiplash, sciatica, shin splints, achilles tendonitis, frozen shoulder, tennis / golfers elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, pain from arthritis, digestive problems, and postural problems
